15 Beauty Favourites of 2015

I have been watching "Best of 2015", "2015 Favourites" and "Top 2015 Products" on YouTube nonstop. I easily picked out my top 15 beauty products of the past year so I thought I would do up a quick overview of items I discovered in 2015 and share them with you. In no particular order we have:

Julep Bare Face Cleansing Oil
I think this was technically a 2014 discovery but I rediscovered and really fell in love with it this year. I have quite oily skin and I avoided any cleaning oils for a long time, this came in a Julep Maven box and I am so glad I forgot to skip that month. It just melts my makeup off, even if I do have to scrub at waterproof eye makeup there is no stinging or irritation. To help balance oil production I use this at night instead of a more harsh cleanser. I apply once to remove makeup and then again to make sure everything has been removed. I already have one as a back up and as soon as I open that one I will add another to my next Maven box.

Jergens Wet Skin Moisturizer
I originally got a sample of this in a Sample Source package and honestly did not expect much. So wrong. I do not moisturize nearly as much as I should but this makes it so easy. While you are still warm from the shower, before drying off you put this on like normal lotion and then pat dry. I have a full size in my shower and use it everyday, it takes seconds and has really helped keep my skin soft in these winter months.

Clinique Acne Solutions
While I no longer use this regularly I will always suggest this to someone struggling with blemishes. I have never been acne prone but for a good portion of this year I could not get my skin to clear up. I decided to try this three step system and before I had to repurchase my skin was clear. Like I said, I do not use this regularly since my skin has returned to its original state but I plan on continuing to keep it at hand for when my skin rebels or I go too many nights without removing my make up.

Redken All Soft Shampoo and Conditioner
I have always loved Redken products and used many over the years. I have hair that is dry, thin but easily weighed down and prone to get oily very quickly. This set gives my ends the moisture I need without leaving behind greasy build up.

Urban Decay B6 Complexion Prep Spray
I live in a small, East Coast, Canadian city so high end makeup is pretty hard to find anywhere but online so when I saw the Urban Decay display at Shoppers I went a little overboard. (Review to come!) One of the items I picked up was this spray. I love what it has done for my skin, my pores are smaller, redness around my nose has been reduced and my skin is becoming less oily. If I have to go right from work to somewhere else I spray this over my makeup for a refresh, powder and go.

Crown Brush C476 Crease/Shadow Brush
This is the perfect eyeshadow brush. Just look at it, what else do I need to say? It is all you need. I have another one coming from Hautelook right now.

Straight up stole this photo from tonyatalksbeauty.blogspot.ca. Go check her blog out so it makes it ok.

Marcelle Soothing Cleansing Water
I think this was a Winners find and I use it pretty much everyday. It takes off the most stubborn waterproof makeup without any irritation, redness or leaving any residue. It is also alcohol free and recognized by the Canadian Dermatology Association.

Revlon Color Stay Gel Envy
This product was a serious game changer for me. I had converted to exclusively gel polish manicures, even have my own little pink lamp, but it was starting to damage my nails. I mean pealing the polish rather than soaking didn't help but moving on... I decided to give my nails a break and after reading some great reviews I picked up a couple colours, I now have seven or eight and rarely use my actual gel polish anymore. It does not last on me for two full weeks without chipping like some say but I can wear it for two weeks with minimal chips.

Covergirl Pop Balm
I believe I have the entire Pop Balm collection and a couple from the Nude Balm collection as well. I love tinted balms and Covergirl has a great colour range. Check out this post out for a more in-depth review.

Stay-Matte Sheer Pressed Powder in 01 Stay Buff (VF)
I have a few Clinique products and have never really been disappointed with the brand. I love this powder, it has light coverage and helps set my makeup and keeps it from looking oily for a little longer through out the day, I have hit pan but will likely be purchasing it again once I use up all my setting powders. If you have oily skin give this powder a shot.

Acure Unscented Argon Oil Towelettes
I can honestly say these are the best face wipes I have ever used. The came in an Ipsy bag in 2015 and I fell in love. Not only did they remove all my makeup but my face actually felt like I had removed my makeup and used cleanser. I never thought I would get a deep clean from makeup wipes but these were amazing, I might have to break down and order a bunch online.

LOC Ultimate Collection
I cannot rave enough about this launch from Birchbox and Tati Westbrook. Both the eyeshadow sticks and lip colours have seriously impressive staying power. If you want to hear more click here.

Beauty Blender
I was a little late to the Beauty Blender obsession but now I use it everyday and have a backup waiting for when mine needs to be replaced. With most foundations it leaves a more natural finish, lasts longer and blends seamlessly. Bonus: it is way easier to clean than a brush full of foundation.

Aromatherapy Collection from Bath and Body Works
I am all about the Stress Relief bubble bath from BBW. I also have the candle in the same scent, the Sensual bubble bath and the Sleep Pillow Mist. When I use the candle and bubble bath together I practically go catatonic, for an anxiety case like me it is amazing to be able to let go of all the constant stress and just relax. I have repurchased this many times and will continue to do so. (When it is on sale)

Aveeno Dry Shampoo
I have decided that I am going to "train" my hair to need washed less often. This is not going to be easy since I religiously wash my hair everyday. I have tried a number of dry shampoos and for the most part thought they did nothing but make my hair feel gross. My sister used this on my hair over the holidays and while it still felt like I had dry shampoo in my hair I did not feel disgusted every time I touched it and my hair looked great.

There you have it, 15 of my favourite beauty products from 2015. I hope everyone had a great year and wish you health and happiness in 2016.

Top 5 - September and October 2015

**UNFAVORITE: Blogger will not let me format things to stay centered and it is severely pissing my off. ***

This favourites post is pretty Clinique heavy, if you want to read about some more Clinique products check this out. The background is a bonus favourite item, it is an electric blanket that Beast got me from Walmart and it is AMAZING. I love fuzzy couch blankets and one that heats up can only be better. My cats also love it and at night I have two companions close by snuggling up to the warm.

Clinique Stay-Matte Oil Free Makeup in 02 Alabaster (VF-N)
I can say without hesitation that this is my favourite foundation to date and I have tried a foolish number of foundations. If you have oily skin give this a try. My t-zone does still get shiny but the makeup does not separate and it holds up well if I blot throughout the day. My makeup looks matte much longer then with any other foundation I have ever used. I was concerned about the colour range as this was one of the two palest shades and I did not think it would work for me. I had a woman at Shoppers colour match me and I decided to give it a shot. As long as I make sure to blend well it works perfectly. I would say this is right in the middle of drugstore vs high end makeup at about $30. I am not used up my first tube so my opinion may change but I hope this love stays true.

Clinique Stay-Matte Sheer Pressed Powder in 01 Stay Buff (VF)
Since I love the foundation so much it only seemed natural that I would love the powder and that is exactly the case. It does a great job of absorbing oil and keeping my skin shine free for hours longer then other powders. I don't carry it in my purse but I imagine it would be perfect for touch up when the oil starts to shine through. The green, marbled packaging is also gorgeous.

Clinique High Impact Mascara in Black
I got this as part of a gift with purchase from Sears and am a big fan. It lengthens, gives enough volume that it's not too much for everyday and does not flake or smudge. I use other mascaras I have and always come back to this one.

L'Oreal Pop Balm in 518 Tender Mauve
I bought this and quickly went back to the store to buy five more L'Oreal Balm products. For a full review click here.

The Balm, Balm Girls Lipstick in Mia Moore
The Balm was recently on Hautelook and I picked up a few things. I am in the process of doing a review but I could not wait to talk about this lipstick. First, the packaging is adorable, very retro and classic. Second it is the perfect red lipstick, it doesn't make my teeth look yellow, it dries to a sort of satin matte look without over drying my lips and lasts for hours. Even through two cups of tea and a muffin! It isn't an all day wear but once it does start to wear off it does so somewhat evenly, not completely but more so than a lot of other dark lipsticks.

I really love all these products and have been talking about them to anyone that will listen. I've gotten numerous compliments on my foundation and the Mia Moore lipstick since I bought them.

Clinique Haul and Review

I have begun a serious Clinique obsession. It started when I purchased the Acne Clearing 3-Step System and the Moisture Surge Overnight Treatment. Then I picked up the Stay-Matte Oil-Free Makeup, after I fell in love with that I decided to try the Stay-Matte Oil-Free Pressed Powder. When I went to Sears to purchase it I was told if I pre-orded it and came back to pick it up in a week I would get a sample kit worth $85. How could I pass that up? When I went in to pick up my item and gift I decided to purchase the Universal Primer as well so I actually ended up with two sample kits. I have been able to try each of these products and thought I would share my thoughts on each one.

Stay-Matte Oil-Free Makeup in 02 Alabaster (VF-N) $31
I have been trying to find a foundation that works on my oily skin for such a long time and this is the best out of the dozens I have tried. It is oil-controling, absorbs shine and mattifies for all day wear. I would say this is medium coverage but feels so light that I barely feel like I am wearing any foundation at all and it looks natural, not like you have slathered it on. The main problem that I have with most foundations besides oil and shine showing through is that it separates and moves around my face. With the Stay-Matte oil and shine do show through eventually but the foundation does not separate as quickly and it is less disturbed by blotting. My one issue is that I had a really hard time finding a colour match, I ended up having a Boutique worker at Shoppers colour match me to 02 Alabaster which if I build it up too much it is still a little too dark. Overall I am a huge fan of this foundation ansd I will be replacing it when I run out. As I began using this daily I decided I wanted to try both a primer and powder from Clinique to complete my foundation routine.

Superprimer Universal Face Primer  $33
I was hopping that there would be a primer in the Stay-Matte line specifically for oily skin but no such luck. I decided I would at least give the Superprimer Universal Face Primer a try since it did say that it was for all skin types. The first time I used this I was shocked at how flawless my foundation went on. I am still in the trial stages of testing out this primer but I can say that it is much better then the ones I have tried out so far including the Smashbox Photo Finish Primer and the Pore Minimizing version as well as cheaper. I am holding out hope that Clinique will add a primer to the Stay-Matte line.

Stay-Matte Sheer Pressed Powder in 01 Stay Buff (VF) $31
Skipping powder to set my foundation is not an option. I have found a couple drugstore options that work well enough but they do not compare to this powder. I have only used this a handful of times so I am not committed to it yet but as of this moment I see myself repurchasing it as it really does help control shine and oil above and beyond what the Stay-Matte foundation does for me.

Rinse-off Foaming Cleanser $25 for 150ml
This cleanser is so creamy and gentle. I have tried a number of Clinique cleansers and this one is an excellent formula. It does not dry my skin out but still effectively removes makeup and cleanses. I have been using the Acne Solutions Foaming Facewash but since I do not have what I would consider acne prone skin it is a little too strong so I am glad to have another cleanser to alternate with.

Turnaround Overnight Revitalizing Moisturizer $46 for 1.7oz
This lotion is supposed to reveal brighter and smoother skin while you sleep. I can not speak to the long term effects but the next day my skin felt moisturized without being overly oily. I use the Moisture Surge Overnight Treatment when my skin is dry but it is too much for every night. This one is more of a nightly lotion.

Rinse-off Eye Makeup Solvent $23 for 125ml
This little guy missed the main photo shoot but was part of the sample kit. I am not normally a huge fan of eye makeup solvents or removers and prefer to use cleansing oils to remove my make up but this is an excellent product. It took all my makeup off brows to lashes without stinging or leaving any oiliness behind. There is not really any scent either. The first time I used it the skin around my eyes were red for about ten minutes after use but there was no pain or dryness and it did not happen after using it the second time. I have two of these and two bottles of cleansing oil to go through but I would consider picking this up if I was to buy a makeup remover.

Calyx Perfume $65 for 50ml
I am not a fan of this perfume at all. If I can not find someone who wants it I am going to toss it out. The description on the Clinique website:

"An exhilarating scent that is sparkling and fresh. Energizing and audacious, it uplifts the mood and is ideal for the fragrance connoisseur who appreciates the fresh distinction of this unique and highly acclaimed scent."

High Impact Mascara in 01 Black $21 for full sized
I love this mascara, it gives my lashes some volume, makes them look twice as long and no matter how many coats it piled on there were no clumps, just long, thick, defined lashes. If it gave a little more volume it would be perfect. It lasted all day and night without smudging or flaking.

Long Last Glosswear in Clearly Pink and Juicy Apple $20 for full size
Since I got two sample bags I was able to get both shades of this gloss. There are 18 shades that range from sheer coverage to "full intensity". I was not sure about this gloss as it goes on quite thick but it is not sticky at all and lasts for hours. I have never had such a shiny gloss that also moisturizes.

Other than the perfume sample I am thrilled with the products I have tried from Clinique. The primer and powder have some more trials to go through but my first impressions are quite favourable. The next products I want to try are the Cheek Pop blush and Lip Pop lip colour and primer. I will also keep hoping for a Stay-Matte primer.

Top 5 - August 2015

I actually really looked forward to this post, last month I struggled to pick five products but this month was a totally different story. Most of these were actually all together on my desk already. I have two items from Ipsy, two new Clinique items and one rediscovery of an old favorite.

Tarte Bronzer in Park Ave Princess
This is an ipsy sample and I use this almost everyday. I am painfully pale, sickly even so bronzer is not something I really use as they are all far too dark for me. This one is a game changer, with a light hand I can actually do some contouring. I do not do a lot of contouring as I am not very good to be honest but I love using it to define the hollows of my cheeks and it makes me look a couple steps back from deaths door. At the bottom of this post I have a photo of the product open.

Briogeo Blossom & Bloom Ginseng + Biotin Volumizer
Another ipsy win. I use this every single day no matter what I am doing with my hair, I just spray it on my roots. When it is not too hot to use a blow dryer I get amazing volume from this spray and if I decide to air dry my hair/ am too lazy to go beyond brushing it there is something in it that makes my hair look less greasy and stringy. I am almost out and I will be buying this, I am pretty sure I can not live without it. I am excited to use it in the winter when I will actually be blow drying and styling my hair.

Clinique Acne Solutions All Over Acne Clearing Treatment
I do not know what is going on with my skin lately, I have never had an issue with acne but it has been bad enough that I started using the whole Acne Solutions line from Clinique and it has made such a difference. For more information check out my full review here.

Clinique Moisture Surge Overnight Mask
Since I have oily skin I am very guilty of skipping moisturizer, especially in my morning routine. Terrible, I know. I was struggling with a couple dry patches and the creams I had on hand we not doing anything to help. I went looking for an intense moisture mask when I found this. I used it once overnight and once as a quick half hour treatment and the dry spots no other moisturizer could help were gone.I use this overnight and even after washing my face the next day my face feels moisturized without being greasy. With this overnight mask I can use a very light moisturizer under my make up and it is perfect, not dry, not going to make my makeup slide right off. It is quite an intense mask so I alternate between this and my Julep overnight cream.

Urban Decay Naked 3 Palette
I got this palette for Christmas (shout out to my awesome Mommy) I had gotten away from it over the summer and recently pulled it out again. This is perfect for everyday looks and has a couple darker shades for something a little more smokey. I do not find the shadows are crazy pigmented but for everyday I prefer something buildable so I do not over do it. I would purchase another Naked palette but not the three again, I love it but I could do without the pinky shades. I also love how sturdy the packaging is, it can survive in a suitcase or overnight bag no problem.

I have never had a problem with acne, all through school to have more than three blemishes was unusual. Lately that has not been the case, I have had more breakouts and oiliness then ever before. I had tried a number of face washes like Clean and Clear and Neutrogena but nothing was making much of a difference. I came across this Clinique Acne Solutions while browsing Sephora and decided to give it a try.

Every single bit of this review is based on what I experienced while using this product that I purchased with my own money.  I mean I wish Clinique was sending me things to review but that just is not my reality.

For the first week I recorded my impressions each day:

Day one: I used the entire system the night I purchased it and noticed my skin felt much more matte, even the next morning

Day two: In the a.m. I noticed some redness immediately after use but nothing more than a slight scrub would give me. There was also less oil under my makeup throughout the day.

Day three: I would not recommend this for someone with sensitive skin. It is a rather harsh system but I certainly noticed a reduction in size of my blemishes and they seem to have dried up quite a bit.

Day four: I developed a couple really dry patches and steps two and three are stinging. I switched out the All Over Treatment for my night time routine and just used a regular moisturizer.

Day five: I skipped the All Over Treatment again in the a.m. as my skin was still very dry even after layering two lotions. At night time I used the Clarifying Lotion and All Over Treatment only in problem areas and applied another moisturizer over all.

Day 6: I took a break from the whole routine today. I used a soothing sheet mask but I still had dryness and flakey skin.

Day 7: After a night cream my skin was not as dry in the morning and compared to seven days ago there is a clear reduction in number, size and redness.

At this point I was noticing serious improvements in regards to both number and size of my blemishes but my skin was getting so dry and flakey. So dry that none of the moisturizers I had were making any improvement. I wanted to continue using this system because it was working. I decided to go looking for an intense moisturizing mask or treatment. I found another Clinique product, the Moisture Surge Overnight Mask.

This is not something I would normally pick up but I am glad I did. I used this once overnight and once as a quick half hour treatment and the dry spots that no other moisturizer could do anything to help were completely gone. If you have dry skin go buy this. I currently alternate with my usual Julep night cream because it is too much for me to use nightly but I am sure this will be very helpful for dry winter skin.

The Verdict:

Well I have already purchased a full sized version of all the products and when I did so I got a little sample of the 7 Day Scrub Cream which I also love. Overall I am impressed by the system once I got the dryness taken care of I had no further issues with dryness, stinging or redness. I am still struggling with blemishes but they are not nearly as noticeable and the healing process is so much faster. I do feel like my pores have been unclogged and even noticed a reduction in the number of blackheads on my nose. I do not, however, notice much in the way of pore size reduction but that is not something I was concerned about to begin with. I love using the all over clearing treatment in the morning before applying make up as it really mattifies my skin. After the initial reduction in oil and shine I do not feel that has continued which makes me think that the system is too harsh and I am producing excess sebum to make up for what my skin thinks it is lacking. I occasionally use a more gentle cleanser to balance that out but I still believe this system works. I would recommend anyone struggling with acne give this a try, if you have dry skin using it twice a day would probably be too much for you, at least at first.

Next I want to try the Clinique makeup as I have only heard good things. I am looking forward to trying the primer, a foundation, maybe a powder and the chubby sticks. Hell I want to try it all!

Haul April 2015 - Julep, Bath and Body Works, Costco, Dollar Store

This haul is rather scattered, things I have picked up here and there and have just been too lazy to post about. I also bought a few primers to try out but that will be another post. I will link that below once it's up.

Oil of Morocca Argan Oil set by Marc Anthony. $19.99ish
I saw this originally in a YouTube video by Ashley Elizabeth and as soon as she said this was at Costco for like 20-24 dollars I was on a mission. There is a giant shampoo with a pump, super excited about that, a conditioner and an oil treatment. I promised myself that I would not open these until I used up one set of the three shampoo and conditioner sets I have in the shower. Life determined that was a lie. I have been having issues with frizzyness and static and it is all a distant memory. I like this line so much that I bought the next item.

Oil of Morocco Argan Oil Perfect Blowdry Smoothing Cream sale $9.99
This says it will keep your hair smooth for three days, I'm sure that is true but there is no way I could go more than a day without washing. This cream is thicker than any other blow dry cream I have tried so the first time my hair was a little greasy but since then it has made my hair smooth, soft and more manageable throughout the day. My one problem is that the pump is broken, slightly inconvenient but I just put some in a jar because I do not return things.

Clinique Kit $29 at Shoppers
I have declared war on my oily skin. I was looking at some of the products in the shoppers when a very helpful lady suggested the Clarifying Lotion aka toner, get over yourself Clinique. Now apparently Clinique has a rating system of one through four in regards to its skin care products. I don't know what all of them are but I am a three which as far as I gather is when your T-zone is oily but the rest of your face is "comfortable". I picked up this kit so I could try a few different products. Included is Liquid Facial Soap in the Oily Skin Formula, Clarifying Lotion 3, Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel for combination oily to oily skin. On the box it says after ten days of regular use twice a day I will see the Clinique Glow, have fresher and more balanced skin. I only use it once a day since I am pretty committed to my nighttime routine but I have still noticed a difference in my skin, the oily bits are starting to balance out but I do have a couple dry spots that are persistent. I will buy the toner once I use it up, I really think I owe most of the improvement to that perticular product. I will likely purchase the the fash wash once I use up the Neutrogena I just bought. I'm less sold on the lotion but I am still glad I got it in the kit, very light weight and goes on smoothly under makeup.

13 Cartridges of Schick Intuition razor blades $24ish maybe
This is my favourite thing from Costco, I've never done the math to see if this is a good deal or not but I am only going to buy them like this because I just want a bunch at once. It also comes with a new handle thinger and those things get gross after a while. I also keep a spare for anytime I am forced to travel and then I can just throw it out rather than bring a wet razor back with me. I recommend this product if you are a clutz and shouldn't be trusted with blades, it is the safety scissors or razors. My life has likely been prolonged because of this wonderful product.

Dual Action Complexion Brush
I don't even remember where I got this, Walmart I think. I was under ten bucks and has changed my life! Such a good product, my face has never been this clean. The side you can see has little rubber nubbies that are supposed to get all the gunk out of your pores, the other side is softer, longer white bristles that really scrub your face and foam up your face wash. I have not washed my face without this since I bought it.

I realized I had quite a few points or "Jules" from Julep so I decided to use them and I got:

Brilliance Glycolic Hand Scrub
I have gotten this in Maven boxes before and really enjoy it. I have made it part of my manicure routine as well as my after the gym routine to avoid callouses from the weights. According to the box "Natural apricot seeds whisk away dirt, oil, and dead skin cells while a potent concentration of glycolic acid works to fight signs of aging." Apricot seeds are my favorite exfoliant, everyone has a has favorite exfoliant right? They are just the perfect size and do not dissolve. If you are looking for a cheaper but still super effective exfoliant the Saint Ives Apricot Scrub is my absolute favorite, very rough and the formula is really thick so you really feel like you are getting all the dead skin off.

Crystal Nail Files
When you purchase something at Juelp you can pick up to three "add ons" which are just random things they offer at a cheaper price. These nail files are normally around $13 dollars if I remember correctly and I believe it was $5.99 to add these one. Why not? As my friend and occasional manicurist Melly can attest to I despise having my nails filed, absolutely hate it. I just can not stand the feeling of the file dragging across my nails, especially if it lifts up at the same time. Ew. Just can not handle it. These are a lot more gentle than most files but still effective. They are made of glass and seem like they will be really long lasting.

Bath and Body Works

It was pre-destined that I was to spend too much money at BBW. I was at the office on pay day and my office mate got  an email saying there was a 50% off sale on Aromatherapy. Well damn.

Eucalyptus Spearmint Body wash and Foam Bath from the Stress Relief line at BBW
This product is the reason I was so excited about the sale. That bottle is $13 dollars regular price, foolish. It is my favorite body wash ever, it just smells so natural and fresh and it really does help relieve stress. This also makes a decent bubble bath, not as good their "luxury bath" but it's still my favorite way to relax, I could just huff this all day. I was going to buy two of these but then I smelled:

Jasmine Vanilla Body Wash and Foam Bath from the Sensual line at BBW
Jasmine is a scent I have been really loving lately and Beast was encouraging me to buy from this line haha. Seriously though it really does have a sexy scent. I am a big fan, I use this when I want more of a feminine scent.

Lavender Chamomile Pillow Mist from the Sleep line at BBW
I do not know how I have been able to sleep before this magical elixir came into my life. Since I am still crushing on all things lavender scented I snatched this up. Amazing. I just love this, it is so relaxing and just makes me let go of any worries I take to bed with me right away. I will buy this in bulk when it goes on sale.

Foaming Hand Soaps 26 for $0.78 (or something like that)
You just can not go to a BBW sale without leaving with more hand soap than you need. I picked up Sunshine and Lemons for the kitchen as kitchens should smell like lemons, Hawaiian Pink Hibiscus, Honolulu Sun which smells just like the resort in Jamacia i went to and Island White Pineapple. I really like these soaps, I prefer foam soaps but the gelly exfoliating ones are also lovely.

Travel/Trial Size Nourishing Hand Cream in Hawaiian Pink Hibiscus and Maui Mango Mai Tai
Now these I had no intention of buying but when Beast Grabbed a bag I guess these were in it. Oh well, I might use them but for now they are in the gift pile in my closet. They do smell amazing but I am just not a huge fan of the lotions from BBW  they just do not moisturize as much as I would like and I find they do not absorb well.

Can't get enough of me? Check this out:
